i'm out of my mind

hey friends-

so tonight i decided to check out a new church with some friends. this one is called Mosaic, and it's a hipster church that caters to the artistic crowd. i've never been to a church quite like this one- it's in a nightclub. a mayan themed nightclub, with mayan gods carved into the walls. the place was built in 1927 so it smells like a 80 year old frat house, which is more or less what it is. the music was uniquely ingrid michaelson sounding, really legit. they did some of their own stuff and a mat kearney song. the band reminded me of my belmont worship times- a few acoustic guitars and a drum box and a bass. and we all got leather bracelets at the end that say "i choose insanity" after we shouted it at the top of our lungs.

anyway, the point of this post:

in the midst of my life, constantly shifting and throwing me around and looking more like a roller coaster than a highway, i've learned that God thrives when you trust everything to him, and make the risky, insane decisions... like going out to los angeles in the middle of a recession to study something i know nothing about. and it's been a great experience. not always easy or fun, but really great.

my question and challenge to you: how much risk are you letting yourself have in your life? i guess the theme of this month is sometimes God is only as big as you'll let Him be- i mean, if you don't give Him anything to control or guide in your life then He won't control or guide anything in your life. and if you're not doing anything risky, if you're managing everything just fine on your own-- what's the point of having faith?

so this is my encouragement to you, to go out and do something risky. i think all of us are doing something risky in some way or another. but maybe this week will be the week you talk to your coworker who is hard to love or who just needs to hear what God has to say to them... or maybe it's joining that bible study... or maybe it's wrestling with if you are where you need to be right now... or maybe it's letting that calling out into action, starting that nonprofit or selling all your stuff and donating the money to a church so you can live more frugally. or maybe you should give a quick update on this blog (just kidding, that's not risky. but seriously- i wanna hear updates but i'm way too lazy to have a 30some-way skype call)

my point is, vandy taught us to control everything- our image, our grades, our relationships, and our careers. and as rob bell (i think? maybe tim chaddick) says, the focal point of the sermon on the mount is that we need to give up control, give it to God.

i choose insanity. but i definitely don't regret it.

2 cor 5:13
If we are “out of our mind,” as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you.
